Description:
Baskets from small to relatively large, in its central part with hermaphrodite flowers and are generally larger in circumference blossoms asexuallarger flowers on the periphery. Leaf sheath tightly arranged like tiles in multiple rows. Each leaf ends with dry membranous appendage, many times with ciliary edge, sometimes ending with a thistle or all become branched thistle. Anthers at its base or be swept or maintained in pigtails. General bed of the blossom bristly-hairy. Fruits lanky cylindrical, usually slightly flattened with belly button located at the side, at the base. Kite consists of several rows of bristles, often lacking. Kite 2 - 3 times shorter than the fruit or missing. Lining of the baskets 15 - 18 mm wide. Baskets usually collected in thyroid inflorescence. Leaves oval or lance.

ssp. phrygia (C. austriaca Willd.) - green leaves without a web hair. Appendages of involucral leaflets wide triangular base, 5 - 2 mm wide, continued in a 2 - 6 mm long tail, straight or nearly unscrewing back.
var. phrygia - Appendages of involucral leaflets black; shell 16 - 20 mm long and 14 - 18 mm wide. Kite about 1 mm long. Vitosha, Rila mountains.
var. moesiaca (Urum. et Wagn.) Stoj. et Acht. (C. m. Ur. Et Wagn.) - Appendages of involucral leaflets pale brown, the shell 12 - 14 mm long and 12-14 mm wide. Kite missing or barely developed. Mainly in Southwestern Bulgaria.
ssp. degeniana (Wagn.) Stoj. et Acht. (Q. D. Wagn.) - Appendages of involucral leaflets with triangular-lance base, 1 - 1.5 mm wide and 3 - 5 mm long, almost unscrewing tail cilia. Mean Balkan mountain, Ruse, Vitosha, Rila Average Rhodope mountain, Plovdiv.
ssp. indurata (Janka) Stoj. et Acht. (C. i. Jka.) - Appendages of involucral leaflets with lance base, 0.6 - 1 mm in clear width. Kite missing or underdeveloped. In some parts of the country.
ssp. stenolepis (A. Kerner) Gugl. (C. s. A. Kern.) – The leavesa, especially in the young state web-like-fiber. Appendages of involucral leaflets lance with base 0.2 - 0.4 mm in clear width, narrowed in fibrous, up to 8 mm long cilia tail curved back. Kite about 0.5 mm long. Widespread.
