English Name: Milkwort family

Description:

Small trees, shrubs and perennial or annual herbaceous plants with simple, successive, rarely opposite or tufted leaves, at base without stipules, or less frequently with scaly or prickly ones. Inflorescence cluster, class or broom. The blossoms are bisexual, irregular. Calyx of 5 loose or ingrown leaves, inner 2 longer than the three outer corolla (wings); corolla of 3 - 5 unequal leaves, both lateral free (most often underdeveloped or missing), the other three more or less adherent to the stamens, often ciliate on top; stamens 8, the petioles fused into a tube, split at the bottom. The carpellum of two carpels, with an upper double-ovary ovary, with one seedling in each nest; the style at the top two-lobed, rarely glabrous. The fruit is a flattened dorsal abdominal box, in each nest with one seed, a nut or a seedling, with or without endosperm and often with a fibrous appendage. Insect-pollinated plants.
