Description:
Perennial herbaceous plants, tubers spherical or flattened in vertical axis. Roots thin filament. Stems single, numerous, with single blossom on top. Leaves round, reniform, with heart-shaped base, long handles occurring during or after flowering. Calyx five parts-shaped, shares spiked, free, overlapping at the base. Corolla properly five parts-shaped, short tube, corolla shares forming crown or back pointed at, with or without tabs at the bottom. Stamens 5, attached at the base of tube, anthers back cuneiform. The bar back wedge with unclear shaped stigma. Ovary superior, single nest-shaped. Fruit box ball, seeds numerous, dish-shaped or three edge, small verrucose.
Economic importance . Some species are introduced into the culture of the XVII century. indoor and garden plants with high ornamental value. Tubers contain poisonous glycoside cyklamin.
