Fam:   Caryophyllaceae Juss.
Genus:   Dianthus L.
English Name: Carnation

Description:

Herbaceous annuals and perennials, rarely subshrubs, with opposite leaves without stipules. Blossoms, single or arranged in clusters, often they are collected in bundles or heads; heads at the base often enveloped by bracts, reduced in the form of flakes. Calyx tubular or funnel, with parallel veins, the top 5 tabs, at the base of 2 - 6 bract scales – a calyx with flakes. Petals without protuberances on its upper surface - the basis of their enlarged part; lamina narrowed down in a linear, relatively long fingernail. Stamens10. The ovary is formed by two vege-sheets, with upper single station ovary, with many ovules and the top 2 bars. Fruit single station, usually elongated ellipsoid box when ripe opens on top with 4 tabs, seated or lying on their own short stalk - Karpoforo. Seed round, flat or thyroid or shallow dish prominent. Embryo straight inside the endo- and perisperm.
Economic significance. All our carnations can be used as ornamental plants was planting in gardens and flower beds or groups on artificial rock groups, either for making bouquets. Many members can be forced indoors for earlier flowering. In folk medicine decoction of leaves and flowers of carnations are used against skin rashes, headaches, cramps and more. Many representatives contain saponins.

Dianthus is a genus of about 300 species of flowering plants in the family Caryophyllaceae, native mainly to Europe and Asia, with a few species extending south to north Africa, and one species (D. repens) in arctic North America. Common names include carnation (D. caryophyllus), pink (D. plumarius and related species) and sweet william (D. barbatus). Description
The species are mostly herbaceous perennials, a few are annual or biennial, and some are low subshrubs with woody basal stems. The leaves are opposite, simple, mostly linear and often strongly glaucous grey-green to blue-green. The flowers have five petals, typically with a frilled or pinked margin, and are (in almost all species) pale to dark pink. One species, D. knappii, has yellow flowers with a purple centre. Some species, particularly the perennial pinks, are noted for their strong spicy fragrance.
