Description:
A perennial plant. Stem branched from the base of several primary recumbent, ascending or more or less hardening is upright branches; usually the last branch repeatedly secondary; round, unilaterally covered with short curved hairs or or on bare, up to 20 - 25 cm long. Leaves opposite, linear styliform, usually draped in length, sessile, at the base slightly expanded, with white membranous ciliary edge of tapered tip, green to gray-green, naked, 5 - 10 mm long, usually more or less equal internodes or shorter than them; last 6 - 10 mm in length. Blossoms sessile, grouped in clusters zymosan top concise. Bract leaves styliform, curled along their length, edge tunicates, 1/2 to 1/3 of the length of the calyx. Calyx with ripe fruit (3) 3.5 - 4.5 mm long, goals or underlying fringedunderlying fringed; shares with 2/3 longer than the tube and elliptical, on the top more or less blunted, with clear green dorsal vein and wide white membranous edge, fetal face or atop a slight downturnfetal face or atop a slight downturn, in length equal. Stamens - 10. Fruit membranous. Seed lenticular, smooth, up to 1 cm long. Homogam (identical gametes), entomophilic, self-pollinating.

Perennial knawel (Scleranthus perennis L.) is a perennial herbaceous plant of the carnation family. It grows on sandy, dry, acidic soils. It can grow up to 15 cm high and has white flowers of 2–5 mm. The plant used to be economically significant as the major host plant of the Polish cochineal.

Distribution in Bulgaria: In dry grasslands, rocky and sandy places. Widespread until about 1500 m altitude (Conspectus of the Bulgarian Vascular Flora) = conspectus&gs_l= Zlc.
