Fam:   Convolvulaceae Vent.
Genus:   Convolvulus L.
English Name: Bindweed, Morning glory

Description:

Shrubs, semi-shrubs or perennial (rarely annual) herbaceous plants. Stems erect, ascending, creeping or twisting, without milk juice. Leaves sessile or on petioles, simple, consecutive, entire, rarely cut or dentate. The flowers are single, in cymose (dichasia or monohazies) or glabrous inflorescences, in the grooves of the leaves, along the stem and its top part. Bracts 2, subulate, filamentous, linear or lance, not enclosing the calyx. Sepals free, outer and inner two by two identical and slightly or very different from each other, the fifth usually with an intermediate shape and position, often asymmetrical. Corolla funnel-shaped, rarely bell-shaped, on the outside with 5 clear longitudinal fibrous or bare stripes, on the edge with 5 clear shares; the tube naked. Stamens 5, petioles broadened at base, longitudinal uneven, naked or glandular; the anthers are equal. Ovary fibrous or naked with a cup-similar or annular disc at the base, two-sided, in each well with 2 erect, anatropic seedlets. The style one, shorter than the crown; stigma 2, naked, filamentous, cylindrical or cylindrically lamellar shovel-shaped. Box ovoid, spherical or conical, bursting along the sockets or irregularly from the base, glabrous or fibrous, with 1 - 4 seeds. Seeds ovoid lenticular or irregular, fibrous or glabrous, warty, grainy or smooth on the surface.

Economic importance. A number of species are suitable for decorative purposes, some play the role of soil consolidators.

Convolvulus /kənˈvɒlvjuːləs/[1] is a genus of about 200[2] to 250[3][4] species offlowering plants in the bindweed family Convolvulaceae,[5] with a cosmopolitan distribution. Common names include bindweed and morning glory; both names shared with other closely related genera.
They are annual or perennial herbaceous vinesbines and (a few species of) woody shrubs, growing to 0.3–3 m tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, and theflowers trumpet-shaped, mostly white or pink, but blue, violet, purple or yellow in some species.
Many of the species are invasive weeds; but others are cultivated for their attractive flowers, while some are globally threatened.
Convolvulus species are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidopteraspecies, including the convolvulus hawk moth, the sweet potato leaf miner(Bedellia somnulentella) and the gem; the leaf miner Bucculatrix cantabricellafeeds exclusively on C. cantabricus.
