Fam:   Cruciferae Juss. (Brassicaceae)
Genus: Descurainia Webb. et Bertth.
English Name: Tansymustards

Annual or biennial herbaceous plants, much less often perennial or shrubby, with short, branched or starlike, rarely not branched, and sometimes with glandular hairs. Leaves 2 - 3 times finely feathery-like cut (last shares lance or narrowly linear) usually with petioles, only the uppermost ones sat down. Inflorescences without bracts. Sepals most often yellowish, blunt, pointing obliquely upwards or spreading, without bag extension at the base. Petals greenish or pale yellow to golden yellow, narrowly shovel-like, usually not longer than the calyx. Stamens 6; anthers protruding beyond the flowers; petioles thin, long, extended to the base, without teeth. Nectar glands thin, fine-grained, lateral annular, with a notch in the inner, cylindrical middle, joined to lateral in a closed ring. The ovary is cylindrical. The fruit is a short, linear or lance pod (in some North American species almost pods). The caps are convex, with a clearly visible midrib and weak mesh-shaped lateral veins. The style very short, with a disc-like or almost spherical, usually entire stigma. Partition wall thin, transparent, with 1 - 3 longitudinal vein grooves. Seeds single-row, rarely double-row, small, oblong, orange or yellow brown, almost smooth, with poor wetting.

Supposedly self-pollinated.

Descurainia is a genus of plants in the mustard family which are known commonly as the tansymustards.[1] They are similar in appearance to other mustards, sending up long erect stems and bearing small yellow or whitish flowers. Many species are noxious weeds. Some species are toxic to livestock and become a nuisance when they grow in grazing fields. Plants of this genus are found worldwide in temperate regions. Descurainia sophia, (flixweed or herb sophia), is the type species of Descurainia.
