Description:
Perennials. Inflorescence similar to wheat class. Perianth leaflets free, 5 of them gathered in the helmet. Lip at the base with a short spur, tripartite, middle share deep cut in two, often greatly extended. Ginostemium dull. Stamen one. Staminal pocket at the base with a bag. Plants with two underground oval tubers. This genus of orchids was represented in Bulgaria with a kind allocated before as H. hircinum (L.) Spreng. Protected by the Biodiversity Law.

Himantoglossum is a genus of orchids native to the Canary Islands, Europe, southwest Asia and northern Africa.[1] Its members generally have a labellum which is divided into three parts, of which the middle part is the longest.[citation needed]
The genera Comperia and Barlia are now included in Himantoglossum.[1]
