Beschreibung: Pflanze 15 - 50 cm hoch. Stengel dick, gerillt, kahl, ohne grüne Blätter, mit 4 - 5 lanzettlichen, scheidenförmigen Schuppenblättern, 3 – 5 cm lang, gelblich- braun. Blütenstand zylindrisch, 5 - 20 cm lang, dicht und vielblütig, untere Blüten bisweilen entfernt. Blüten mittelgroß, gelblichbraun. Tragblätter lanzettlich, etwa halb so lang wie der gestielte Fruchtknoten. Perigonblätter helmförmig zusammenneigend, 5 - 6 mm lang, stumpf. Lippe 10 - 12 mm lang, am Grunde sackartig ausgehöhlt, abstehend, nach der Spitze zu in 2 seitlich spreizende, zungenförmige, vorn oft gezähnelte Lappen gespalten, ohne Sporn. Fruchtstand lang ausdauemd.
Blütezeit: Von Mai bis Juli.
Höhenverbreitung: Von der Küste bis 2400 m.
Standort: In schattigen Laub- und Nadelwäldern, im Gebüsch, selten in offenen Lagen.
Bastarde: Nicht nachgewiesen.
Bildnachweis: 15. 6. 1981, Stammheim (Baden-Württemberg), H. Baumann. Das Bild zeigt den Blütenstand mit den braun gefärbten Blüten. Die Perigonblätter bilden einen lockeren Helm, die Blütenlippe ist zweilappig, die beiden Seitenlappen spreizen nach außen und sind am Ende abgerundet.

Description: Plant 15 - 50 cm high. Stem thick, grooved, bare, with no green leaves, with 4 - 5 lanceolate, sheath-shaped shed leaves, 3 - 5 cm long, yellowish brown. Inflorescence cylindrical, 5 - 20 cm long, dense and many-flowered, lower blossoms sometimes removed. Blossoms of medium size, yellowish brown. Bracts lanceolate, about half as long as the stalked ovary. Helmet-shaped tepals together inherent, 5 - 6 mm long, dull. Lip 10 - 12 mm long, hollowed out like a sack at the base, spreading, after the peak in 2 to laterally spreading, tongue-shaped, often divided forwards denticulate cloth without spur. Fruit stand long sustained.
Flowering time: From May to July.
Height Spread: From the coast to 2400 m.
Habitat: In shady deciduous and coniferous forests, in the bushes, rarely in open location.
Bastards: Not detected.

The Bird's-nest Orchid, Neottia nidus-avis, is a non-photosynthetic orchid. It is widespread across most of Europe, occurring also in Algeria, Tunisia, western Siberia, the Caucasus, Iran and Turkey. [1] (Codes) [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9]
In the British Isles, Neottia nidus-avis is found in shady woodland, especially beech, on basic soils.[10]
