Beschreibung: Pflanze mittelgroß, 20 - 40 cm hoch. Stengel steif aufrecht, im oberen Teil braunrot überlaufen. Laubblätter 6 - 10, am Grunde rosettig gehauft. Die 3 - 7 Grundblätter sind 4 - 13 cm lang und 0,5 - 2,5 cm breit. Nach oben folgen 2 - 3 scheidenartige Stengelblätter. Der Blütenstand ist kopfig und trägt 3 - 15 große Blüten. Die Tragblätter sind kräftig, braunrot gefärbt, etwa so lang wie der Fruchtknoten. Die Sepalen und Petalen bilden einen lockeren Helm, dessen Nerven deutlich hervortreten. Die Sepalen sind 9 - 14 mm lang und zugespitzt, wie die kürzeren Petalen braunrot gefärbt. Die Lippe ist ganzrandig, halbkreisförmig, am Rande gezähnelt und flach. Sie ist 13 - 25 mm ling und 11 - 20 mm breit, heller oder stärker rosaviolett gefärbt, mit purpurroten Strichen oder Punkten besetzt. Der Sporn ist horizontal und etwas kürzer als der Fruchtknoten. Die Art kann in vier verschiedene Kleinarten aufgespalten werden.
Blütezeit: Anfang Februar (Israel) bis Ende Mai (Südfrankreich).
Höhenverbreitung: Von der Küste bis 1800 m (Algerien).
Standort: Lichte Wälder und Gebüsche, Trockenrasen, auf kalkhaltigen Böden.
Bastarde: Mit Orchis boryi, israelitica, longicornu, morio, selten sind Gattungsbastarde mit Serapias cordigera, lingua, neglecta und vomeracea subsp. vomeracea.

Description: plant of medium size, 20 - 40 cm high. Stem erect stiff, in the upper part brownish overcrowded. Leaves 6 - 10, heaped in rosettes at the base. The 3 - 7 basal leaves are 4 - 13 cm long and 0.5 - 2.5 cm wide. Top Follow 2 - 3 divorced like stem leaves. The inflorescence is divorced like and contributes 3 - 15 large flowers. The bracts are strong, colored brown-red, about as long as the ovary. The sepals and petals form a loose helmet emerge whose nerves significantly. The sepals are 9 - 14 mm long and pointed, as the shorter petals dyed reddish brown. The lip is entire, semicircular, dentate on the edge and flat. It is 13 - 25 mm ling and 11 - 20 mm wide, lighter or more pink colored purple, trimmed with purple lines or points. The spur is horizontal and slightly shorter than the ovary. The species can be divided into four different small species.
Flowering time: early February (Israel) to the end of May (Southern France).
Height Spread: From the coast to 1800 m (Algeria).
Habitat: light woods and thickets, dry grasslands on calcareous soils.
Bastards: With Orchis boryi, israelitica, longicornu, morio, rarely are generic hybrids with Serapias cordigera, lingua, neglecta and vomeracea subsp. vomeracea.

Perennials, tubers cumulus. Leaves lancet with vaginas. Inflorescence usually sparse and with few blossoms. Bracts lanceolate, with 3 - 5 streaks longer than the ovary and usually reddish. Flowers purple. Perianth leaflets oval lancet, collected in helmet. Both of these internal narrower than the other. Oral longer than the helmet, or fan-rhombic, narrowed to base, serrated front chard. Spur a little shorter than the ovary, cylindrical conical, bent down.
