Perennial plant. Rhizome short, branched. Stems several, in the lower third with short internodes, erect or ascending, 15 - 40 cm high, glabrous or with sparse short bristly hairs, at the base with several thin, pale green, 3 - 8 cm long shoots that have scales or small petals in the nodes. Leaves obtusely serrated, with 3 - 6 teeth on the side, glabrous or on the edge and below, mainly on the veins, shortly scattered bristly; lower rounded ovoid, obtuse, rounded at the base, 8 - 13 mm long, 6 - 10 mm wide, with (1) 2 - 3 times longer petiole; middle oblong-ovate to pointedly elliptical, 15 - 30 mm long, 8 - 15 mm wide, obtusely pointed at the apex, rounded at the base, rarely narrowed, with a petiole almost equal to the leaf blade; upper oblong-lance to elliptical-lance, 10 - 20 mm long, 6 - 10 mm wide, pointed, wedge-shaped narrowed at the base in 1.5 - 3 (4) times shorter petiole. Stipules ovate-lance, glabrous or scattered shortly fibrous along the margin and veins; on the lower leaves 1.5 - 3 times shorter, on the middle ones flat, and on the upper ones 1.5 - 2 (3) times longer than the leaf petioles, pinnately or coarsely palmately cut or irregularly serrated to 1/2 - 2 / 3 of the width of the sheet; lateral shares 2 - 5 external and 1 - 2 internal, lance, obtuse or pointed; the middle slightly larger, elliptically lance. Flower petioles 5 - 12 cm long, glabrous, rarely short bristly fibrous to the middle, with bracts below the curve. Flowers 1 - 5 per stem, single in the axils of the middle and upper leaves, back ovoid to trapezoidal, 2.0 - 3.0 (3.5) cm high, 1.6 - 2.4 (3.0) cm wide, odorless. Sepals oblong-lance or linear-lance, strongly pointed, with appendages 10 - 18 mm long, 2.0 - 3.5 mm wide, glabrous or short-bristled, appendages rectangular, 3 - 4 mm long, serrated. Petals light purple or violet; upper directed upwards and sideways, darker, oblong-ovate, 16 - 20 mm long, 8 - 14 mm wide; lateral asymmetrically back ovoid, spreading to the side and directed to the upper - overlap them slightly, 13 - 18 mm long, 7 - 12 mm wide, with 3 - 5 dark purple veins, at the base with cilia; lower broad, fan-shaped, light purple, sometimes white, together with the spur 18 - 26 mm long, 13 - 20 mm wide, rounded or shallowly incised at the apex, orange at the base, with 5 - 7 dark purple veins, narrowed in 2 - 4 mm long grooved, ciliated nail inside and 4 - 6 (7) mm long, violet or green-violet, straight, 1.5 - 2 times longer than the calyx appendages spur. The ovary naked; the style cranked curved at the base, gradually extended upwards; the stigma entire, spherical, with a protruding lower lip and tufts of hairs on the side below it. The box is oblong-ovate, 10 - 12 mm long, 5 - 6 mm wide, light brown, naked. Seeds pale brown, oblong-ovate, 1.5 - 2.0 mm long, 0.8 - 1.2 mm wide; the appendage barely noticeable.
Economic significance. It has large flowers and deserves attention as an ornamental plant.

Distribution in Bulgaria: Growing in meadows, pastures and between juniper bushes, in the high mountain belt. Western and Central Stara Planina, Vitosha, Western Border Mountains, Pirin, Rila, Western Rhodopes, from 1500 to 2300 m above sea level. Indicated for: Eastern Stara Planina (Vel., 1891), Znepol region (Rui - Urum., 1905), Slavyanka (Stoyan., 1921) sub V. tricolor subsp. prolixa and Sredna Gora (Vel., 1898). (Conspectus of the Bulgarian Vascular Flora) = conspectus&gs_l= Zlc.
Distribution: Eastern Europe (Albania, Yugoslavia, Romania, Poland, the western parts of the USSR).
